Coaching Services

This Coaching Profile is intended for people who are considering contracting with me (Karie Brown) as a leadership coach.  In choosing a coach, it is important for you (the client) to understand your own needs and motivations for seeking a coach. If you are interested in engaging with me, I will send you a Coaching Client Intake Form to help you identify and articulate what you hope to address through a coaching engagement.  In this Profile, I lay out my approach to coaching and what you can expect if you choose to work with me.

How the coaching relationship works: The primary element of any coaching engagement is holding regularly scheduled one on one meetings (usually weekly or bi-weekly), in person or by video-conference, over a specified period of time (often beginning with a three-month contract and then extending this, as appropriate, by mutual agreement).  These sessions are supplemented with phone calls and emails, as needed.  The coach may provide relevant resources and, if the client is interested, help identify exercises or reflections to explore between sessions (I call this fieldwork).  At the outset of the coaching relationship, with my support, you will identify an aspirational goal and/or set of behavioral goals that you intend to explore through coaching.  In some engagements, it can be helpful to conduct a modified 360-review process.  If the client is interested, I offer this service as part of my coaching, usually after a few sessions, in the form of conducting interviews with several key people in your life (supervisor, supervisees, peers, clients, family members, core friends). I then share that feedback with you confidentially as a means of context-setting and looking at your opportunities and challenges through a different lens.

What to expect: The coaching relationship is nuanced – reflecting the multifaceted nature of each human being and the context in which each of us walks through the world.  We all bring our histories, our identities, our long-held patterns as well as our hopes and fears to any interaction, especially one that is aimed an unlocking long-term change and new ways of working and being.  As such, every coaching relationship must be based in trust and confidentiality.  The client will be learning and growing through the process and thus the relationship will evolve.  Coaching with me includes: examining core values; practicing life balance; identifying purpose and vision; exploring the assets of age and experience; and engaging in change management . Through the coaching process, you will create a plan for moving ahead – which will support you and also hold you accountable to pursuing the change you seek.

Working with me: It is critical for the client to feel comfortable with and challenged by (to the appropriate level) their coach and that coach’s approach. So, what is it like to work with me?  I take a developmental approach to my coaching: I am holistic in my orientation and focus on unlocking each client’s growth potential.  I have three decades of experience in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, with a focus on social, environmental, gender and racial justice, both domestically and internationally.  I have worked in a range of roles – as a volunteer, founder, senior staff member, CEO, consultant, coach and board member.  In my consulting practice, I am a trusted organizational and strategy development professional.  If you work in these sectors, my experience can enhance our coaching interactions. I also sit on the board of a for-profit corporation and began my  in international commercial banking, so can draw on those experiences as well.  I am a yoga practitioner and teacher; in our coaching sessions, I will encourage self-inquiry and reflection mentally as well as somatically.  People who are open to learning at a mind, body, spirit level will particularly enjoy working with me.  On the following page, you will find quotes from select clients to give you a better sense of my particular stance and strengths.
